.dat is actually a mpeg 1 video , same like dvd .
DVD Is actually mpeg 2 video but when u explore u will see video files as .vob .
so .dat is for vcd
and vob is for dvd

In windows HeroSDVD Player even Windows Media Player can play this . But In linux u can try ( Xine ; Mplyer ) if u have it .

In Windows I easily rename *.dat to *.mpg and it works fine
everywhere...Maybe that should work in Linux too?
