Getting the kernel and source in sync then setting all up in sax2 when in init 3 proved to solve it at last. Some of the other stunts along the way, may have contributed - I couldn't tell.
Yes, that's pretty much the standard drill, just following the nvidia-suse install howto. Not bad, but it is a few steps that some people would rather not have to deal with, so suse does provide the easy default install method, where you just click on the "install nvidia drivers" checkbox in yast, and don't worry about the details. On new installations, I simply check that box and voila, I have accelerated 3D. However, the driver does tend to get stale, as it remains at a static version, and in some cases the acceleration stops happening. In this case, or if you just want the latest and greatest drivers, it's good to know the drill. Joe
