Interesting - I've upgraded to the 6629 driver on several linux systems 
(all suse pro 9.2) and never patched any of them. The thread you 
referenced seems to indicate that there is a problem running windows 
games under wine, without the patches, which would explain why I had no 
problems:

I run only native linux games (ut2004, quake 3, doom3 etc)
