I just almost resolved the same problem on my SuSE 9.0.
I deleted the SuSE rpms and got a hole bunch of rpms from PackMan.
http://packman.links2linux.de/?action=124 (except for the source package)
look also for the dependent rpms at the bottom.
I don't know which of them are really neccessary, so I did all.
Since then I can watch almost all MPEG4 files.
A good site for testing material is:
ftp://www.videolan.org/pub/streams/
Before I could not play any avi on this ftp site like
Projekt_Karotte(DivX).avi
now the only one not playing is:
World.mp4
