Hi!

Just can guess that your camera doesn't support the frame size
that your xawtv comes up with. You may want to try -noscale
option, that sometimes helps with usb cameras.

Another thing I've experienced is that nvidia boards conflict
with camera images, so you get the image distorted or no image.
In this case disabling hardware acceleration helps (using "nv"
module instead of "nvidia")...
