trouble importing files into SLab

I'm having trouble importing files into SLab. I have large
(>100M) .WAV files on CD, and when I select "Tape/Import", I
get the progress dialog for a second or two and then it goes
away. I tried using sox to convert to an .au file on disk first
and had the same result. When I used sox to convert to .raw
first, I was able to import it, but it played back at half speed.
What am I doing wrong?
SuSE 7.2, kernel 2.4.16, Pentium III, 256M RAM, plenty of disk.
