Thanks a lot Mattias. This is the type of thing I wanted to hear :-)
However, I'll try this cautiously, with all data backed up and with
enough time at hand to do a fresh install if necessary. I had this option
enabled in Suse 10.0 (was not default) and I never had any problems
with my fat32 partition. Perhaps I was just extremely lucky. Perhaps
because I wrote to it only rarely. In any case i'll try your suggestion.

On all laptops I install, I do the following:
chmod -x /etc/pm/hooks/99Zgrub
This disables the script and you'll have the choice you want in GRUB.
None of my users has ever had problems with using Windows and Linux
after suspending to disk in one of both worlds.
