Comforming with the branding, some logos in that page are not allowed.
But I remember, red-capped Geeko was on the 'Main page' of the Wiki
during Christmas season a few years ago and I have not heard that Novell
lodged an objection about that.

If it was a few years ago, we might not have had the guidelines we
have now -- or it may have been missed. Or the creator might have
asked / received permission. Just because something slips through, it
may not indicate that the guidelines have changed. ;-)

So, I'd like to ask Novell, "Are we not allowed to modify logos you own
at all, even if we want to use it for our community activities ?"

We're working on a trademark policy, and hope to have it done relatively
soon.

Could you ping us again, when this is done ? Proposal for the time until
the policy is out ?

Tentatively, what we would like to have is a logo that's used for
"official" communications, boxes, etc. and a logo that is available
for "community" activities and can be modified.

You can always ask permission to use the "official" logo as well --
but what we'd like is a policy that allows as many things
automatically as possible. Since we have limited manpower, especially
on the legal side, we want to automate as much as possible and limit
the "special cases."

If we are allowed to modify logos under certain conditions, I'd like to
know the criteria and restrictions.

We're working on that and we'll publish it as soon as we can. Do you
have any input on what kind of situations you need to modify the logo
vs. using the stock logo? (Aside from this one, of course...)

I think most cases can be summarized like this:
* add Subproject name. E.g. "openSUSE Weekly News", "openSUSE Education"
* add Graphic to the icon. E.g. Santa's hat, Edu's "graduate hat"

Best regards,
Jan-Simon
