Hi,

I'll just be frank. IMHO it's rather dull looking in its current state.
I would stick w/ the current frontpage if I had to vote.

I'm also getting an 'Error 404' right now on your example site, BTW.

I do like the international drop down box - but don't get why the
current
frontpage would need a search bar. I like going to opensuse.org and
choosing
between the 3 options (get, discover, build) - makes it real easy.

In the end I'm nobody on this list :)

Thanks,
Tehmasp

Hey!

During Hackweek 3 Andreas Demmer and I made a new frontpage for
opensuse.org, which will replace the 3-Box-Page we currently have on
http://www.opensuse.org
.

The goals of the new page are:

* pickup the visitor at the front-door
* offer more information about the openSUSE-Project on a centralised
page (more; not to much, many, etc., just a overview!)
* stay conform with the openSUSE.org screen-design
* make it easy for newcomers to dig into the openSUSE-Univers.

About the page-design:

The content is always placed in two columns (1/3 to 2/3) and the page
is divided into two halves.
In the top is the eye-candy logo with a short description (we are
still looking for a better/shorter text) of the openSUSE project and
the good old three main sections: software, wiki, build service.
Links to all other o.o-pages are offert at the bottom of the page as
hotwords, so they can be easily found with the filter in your browser
or by scrolling ;-)
The search bar above the the categories is not fully implemented jet.
We plan a selection box (dropdown) in front of the input-field where
you can select the section which should be searched (e.g. like Firefox
search in the top/right corner).
The placement of the search box is carefully chosen. It has a optical
connection to the three sections but there is enough white-space
between the search and the section-chunk to display that they are not
siblings. It's in the upper-right where the most people look for a
search (it's in these area on all o.o-pages).

The lower part of the page contains, in the bigger column,
informations like upcoming events, etc. ... what ever is hot :-)
The smaler column contains the last 5 headlines from news.o.o (updates
every hour), help informations and a link to shop.o.o.
We made a small admin interface to change the content without the code-
hacking and deploying dance.

A localisation is implemented, too. But not deployed now.

You can check out the draft at http://www.suse.de/~rlihm/index.shtml.

We are looking forward to hear your opinions and suggestions.

Best,
Robert
