Sorry for not replying sooner. <Off Topic> Because I was so busy for translating openSUSE Weekly News that I didn't have enough time for testing. :-P
Is there any way to solve this problem ?
These are definitely due to hinting setup. I personally prefer with hinting, but I agree that this often deforms glyph forms too badly.
Try to put the following in ~/.fonts.conf:
================================================================ <?xml version="1.0"?> <!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "/etc/fonts/fonts.dtd"> <fontconfig> <match target="font"> <test name="family"> <string>IPAexGothic</string> <string>IPAexMincho</string> <string>IPAMincho</string> <string>IPAGothic</string> <string>IPAPMincho</string> <string>IPAPGothic</string> </test> <edit name="hinting"> <bool>false</bool> </edit> </match> </fontconfig> ================================================================
This will disable hinting for the specified fonts. If this works better, we can put the rule into the package.
Also, instead of turning off the hinting completely, we can change the hint style. It's a value from 0 to 3, or constants hintnone, hintslight, hint medium, hintfull.
Try to put the following instead of the above to ~/.fonts.conf. The hinting will be enabled a little bit (so you'll see a bit clearer glyph), but shouldn't be deformed too much.
================================================================ <?xml version="1.0"?> <!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "/etc/fonts/fonts.dtd"> <fontconfig> <match target="font"> <test name="family"> <string>IPAexGothic</string> <string>IPAexMincho</string> <string>IPAMincho</string> <string>IPAGothic</string> <string>IPAPMincho</string> <string>IPAPGothic</string> </test> <edit name="hintstyle"> <const>hintslight</const> </edit> </match> </fontconfig> ================================================================
Well, setting "hintslight" worked *almost* well on my openSUSE 11.3 desktop. But on OOo Writer, IPAxeMincho didn't look good, and setting "hintnone" solved the problem. By the way, when I changed the setting for fonts via "KDE Settings", ~/.fonts.conf was automatically generated. I'm afraid this may cause confusion, if the assumed solution for this problem would be adding extra settings to files under /etc/fonts directory. # As far as I understand, settings described in "~/.*" file will always # overwrite the system global settings. Am I worrying over nothing ?
