How to type umlaut and international characters on US keyboard, SUSE 10.0

I have a SUSE 10.0 question. How can I type ü, ö and other
international/special/non-keyboard/deadkey characters? I am finding no
documentation on this subject.
I run Gnome, and have selected in YAST:
Generic 104-Key PC
US English
intl variant
I find that the international variant breaks the ´ (single quote) key
and the ~ (twiddle). Is there a way to get the ability to accent
characters, or type arbitrary symbols, without loosing keys on the keyboard?
I am used to the process of pressing a deadkey initiator, a combining
character, then a character.
