I noticed that my .xim is long, complex (if clauses etc) and possibly outdated. Can that be the reason?
No, it probably isn't outdated. The default ~/.xim is a bit
complex because it tries to choose a good default input method
depending on the language and the installed software.
If you want to use scim always, you can use a simpler ~/.xim file.
What are the contents of your ~/.xim file and what is the
output of
locale
?
