Does something simple like
LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 xfd -fa sans
Do I type that on the command line?
Yes.
Will it also fix the other broken non-Latin fonts?
It won't fix anything, it's just a test to see whether your system behaves normally.
Surely Suse should have set this up correctly.
By the way, I'm certain Suse comes with all necessary fonts, because it's working on another Suse Personal installation I've seen. A full unicode font (CJK included) is only 40 megs or so anyway; I can't imagine that not being included in a three-disc distro.
40 megabyte is a hell of a lot stuff. There is a lot of discussion over each megabyte on the personal.
Again, I apologize for relying on the nice people on this mailing list; this is pretty basic and should have worked out of the box, I think.
It works out of the box for the professional edition.
