I have installed the one from Suse 8.1 and it turns out that

in35:/iuehome/ayalew/tesfaye/ethiopic # rpmlocate ucs.sty
Searching for ucs.sty in rpm db...


Now I run the example:

in35:ayalew >> ~/tesfaye/ethiopic $ latex UTF8-amharic-german.tex
