Problems with canna and SuSE 8.2

Hi,
I'vee installed the kinput2 and canna packages from SuSE 8.2 professional.
kinput2 works, but converting hiragana to kanji doesn't work (kinput2 gives
a japanese error message that the kanji server can't be uesed). cannaserver
is successfully started during boot and is running (checked with "ps aux").
I've tried to remove the original /etc/hosts.canna, but now canna refuses to
start.
Then I tried an empty hosts.canna file ("touch hosts.canna"). Now the
hiragana-to-kanji conversion works as expected.
Any ideas what is missing? I didn't modify the original hosts.canna file (it
contains "localhost" and "unix", no extra spaces, tabs, newlines etc.).
bye
Lars
