It is Unicode-capable, using UTF-8 encoding (also converts UTF-16 input). >From the CHANGES file: ============================================================================= Changes from mined 2000.2 -> mined 2000.3 ========================================= Documentation: -------------- The manual page was updated and thoroughly revised. Its primary source was transformed into HTML, roff/man format being generated. The mined web pages were updated and revised. The file "doc/compilation" (with compilation hints) was updated. Features: --------- HOP '/' enters an indented Javadoc comment frame. Interface: ---------- Options can be concatenated on the command line. (mined -uu instead of mined -u -u enables Unicode line separators.) Right-to-left script input support is now enabled by default. The option -b toggles it. Option -G disables (actually toggles) the display of certain control characters as block graphics characters (enabled by default). Option +G enforces use of block graphics for display of menu borders. May be used if the "alternative character set" capability is not configured in your system but your terminal does have the capability. Set output delay (-d0..-d9) to none (-d-) by default in all versions. The help command was unified on Unix and DOS versions. Not completely, however, as calling a sub-programm ("less") through the "system" call doesn't seem to work on DOS (it crashes or blocks terminal input afterwards, even with cygwin). See also next comment. A second help viewing mode is now avaible (HOP HELP, e.g. HOP F1). It displays help information within mined itself, restoring the previous editing state afterwards. This is the default on MSDOS for the reason mentioned before. Bug fixes: ---------- Fixed a screen-related pointer confusion after replacement with multiple lines (embedded newline) which could result in a display bug and page down could be blocked. (Very minor) Just deleting the trailing line-end of a file is also considered a modification (a file only modified this way would previously not have been saved automatically). (Minor) With UTF-8 auto-detection involved, the character count after reading the file could be wrong (ESC ? would have been correct). (Minor) The pop-up menu, when modified with HOP and thus becoming smaller, used to leave the frame of its previous width on the screen. (Embarassing) Although I was proud of "perfect responsiveness to window size changes" I had just forgotten to implement that for the case of a menu being open. It should prove to be a very solid base for further developments. As of this version, we use (yet another) new versioning scheme: next major version will be 1.3.0, and 1.2.x will be just incremental fixes (like the `fix' series used to be for 1.1.5 and 1.1.6). This version sees the introduction of the so-called `new' insets, which can contain arbitrary text. As a consequence, many new features are now possible: - Floats, footnotes and margin notes are now real insets. The positional parameters of figure, table and algorithm floats can be set float-by-float - Most problems with the new table inset of 1.1.6 have been addressed (memory consumption, file bloat, spell-checking, search and replace...). Better longtable header/footer support was implemented. - TeX mode has been superseded by the ERT inset, which is foldable, or can be shown inline - Notes inset can now contain arbitrary LyX constructs; they will not appear in the output. - New minipage inset Note that another consequence of these changes is that older LyX versions will almost certainly fail to read files produced by LyX 1.2.0. Other more traditional insets have been improved too: - New graphics inset with support for hassle-free inclusion of various image formats (GIF, JPEG, PNG and EPS by default) and a new rendering scheme that should fix the bugs we had with the older ghostscript method. - Support for natbib for bibliography citations The math editor has been mostly rewritten. This begun as a general cleanup, but it turns out that many new features happened in this process, among which: - many of the known bugs or annoyances in mathed have been fixed. - possibility to display all standard latex and amsmath symbols (and also the \mathcal, \mathbb, and \mathfrak fonts)as long as the relevant fonts have been made available to the X server - support for many amsmath features Commands: xrightarrow, xleftarrow, substack, underset, dddot over/under arrows (e.g. underleftarrow). Yangchun Baixue - Chinese Input Server

Has anyone had any experience with this chinese input server (homepage: http://dyp.banruo.net/) Although not released under the GPL it is freely available for personal use from: [XIM SERVER] http://dyp.banruo.net/download/tgz/kinput2c-3.0.1.tgz [CHINESE PINYIN CHARACTER CONVERTER] http://dyp.banruo.net/download/tgz/yang-2.0f.tgz I've been using an English desktop with xcin. However I find xcin so slow and paignful to use (maybe I've got it setup wrongly but shuang pinyin doesn't seem to work - but that's another issue) that I have been looking around for an alternative chinese input system. From what I have seen so far of the Yangchun Baixue (YCBX) is it is very nice - far more powerful than XCIN. However it isn't working very well - it is very erratic and doesn' work as advertised. This is probably a configuration problem and any light that anyone can shed on the problem would be much appreciated. Installation is a simple matter of becoming root and: # cat yang-2.0f.tgz | ( cd /; tar xvzf - ) # cat kinput2c-3.0.1.tgz | ( cd /; tar xvzf - ) Everything is copied into a sensible place. The only problem seem to be the init scripts, I haven't had time to go through them properly and for the moment am starting the server (yangd) by hand. For configuration they recommend: setting LC_ALL=zh_CN.gb2312 and # echo 'kinput2c &' >> /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/xinput # echo 'export XMODIFIERS=@im=kinput2c' >> /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/xinput As SuSE doesn't have an xinput file I decided to make changes to my .profile (so that I can keep the environment English) adding: export LC_CTYPE=zh_CN.GB2312 And then to my .xim file I changed the lines that refer to xcin to: export XMODIFIERS="@im=kinput2c" LANG=$tmplang LC_ALL=$tmplang kinput2c & In OOo I am able to select Chinese input by presing ctrl+space. A box pops up which should have Chinese characters in it but instead has spaces. However you can still type a Chinese sentence in pinyin. When you have finished your sentence hit space and YCBX makes an intelligent guess at selecting characters which you can go through and modify. Kmail works but I don't get the pop up box nor do I get the box to make selections in. KOffice is much the same. If anyone has had any success with this or can recommend another input server I'd very much appreciate some pointers. Thanks in advance, Jethro

Japanese in OpenOffice

Hi, I use kinput2 with cannaserver in SuSE 7.2. Japanese input works fine in Netscape, Mozilla, and kterm, and it _almost_ works in OpenOffice 1.0.1: If I write in kana and don't convert to kanji, then after hitting <enter> the cursor is placed over the middle of the last character and the next character gets written partially overlapping with it. If I convert to kanji, after <enter> I can no longer write in Japanese. It returns to latin input (although the little box indicating Japanese input doesn't disappear), and <shift><space> does not work any more. Nor do <backspace> and <enter> so I have to quit OpenOffice. Has anyone encountered this behavior? Thanks, Karoly

Is there an Icelandic Keyboard Layout?

I have recently aquired SuSE 8.0 Professional and being a complete newbie to LINUX I have not yet resolved this problem I'm having. My question to you is... How can I install an Icelandic Keyboard layout? If anybody out there could help me out It would be most appreciated. With warm regards from Iceland

Thank you, I installed xdevel an at least cjk-lyx starts. But when I try to insert characters it still displays odd stuff. When I try to output to dvi there is a message "cannot create fontset GB2312-0". I can instert chinese charackters in kedit. But I think there is something wrong with some global settings. Sorry about my questions, I am new to linux so my questions may not be that professional. The easiest way to create Type1 versions of these fonts for use with CJK-LaTeX is to use my /usr/sbin/cjk-latex-config script. Just call it like cjk-latex-config --type1 as root and it will create Type1 versions of the fonts which will be used by dvips and by pdflatex. Using Type1 fonts in the PostScript files and in the .pdf files has the advantage that they scale better, i.e. even at very high zoom levels they look nice. When .pk fonts are used you will see the pixels of the bitmaps at high zoom levels. This is also quite visible when you use something like \scalebox{5}{... text ...} in your .tex files. On top of that, .pdf files containing .pk fonts cannot be displayed correctly by xpdf, but when Type1 fonts are used xpdf can display them correctly without problems. chinesische fonts / staroffice / printersetup

Hallo, da ich nun erfolgreich xcin eingerichtet habe (was leider Aufgrund eines Bugs in KDE nicht völlig reibungslos über die Bühne geht! (wenn ich die Xinput Settings in direkt in .profile schreibe stürzt der Windowmanager ab)), stehe ich vor dem nächsten Problem! Star/Openoffice erkennt leider keine chinesischen Fonts, dies ist aber essentiell für mich, weshalb ich mich freuen würde, wenn mir jemand den Installationsweg erklären könnte. Darüberhinaus kann ich leider auch keine ch. Fonts drucken, egal ob ich die Datei in .ps oder pdf oder irgendein anderes Format umwandle! Da ich mich weigere auf Windows umzusteigen nur um vernünftig (!) mit der chinesischen Sprache umgehen zu können, wäre ich für hilfreiche Vorschläge sehr dankbar. (wobei die Arbeit mit Twinbridge / Nanjistar und M$ Word / Tex doch sehr schön funktioniert. Es stehen mehrere sehr schöne Fonts zur Auswahl, die auf Tastenklick vom vereinfachten ins traditionelle Chinesisch wechseln,etc..etc... Aber einen derartigen Komfort kann ich wohl leider nicht erwarten, tue ich allerdings auch nicht!) Also.... wenn mir jemand helfen kann...oder auch sonstige Tips zum Thema Chinesisch und Linux haben sollte (z.B ein Wörterbuch Englisch/Deutsch <-> Chinesisch...etc) würde ich darum bitten sich bei mir zu melden..
