Hebrew fonts

Dear all, I need to enable hebrew writing on my Suse Linux. I succeeded to install the hebrew fonts. I can read hebrew text, however, I don't succeed to write in hebrew. When I change the keyboard fonts and try to write, I just get girbbish on the screen. I'd appreciate and I'd be grateful for any assistance. Regards, Itzhak

Eureka!

Well, it almost all works! KDE 2.2.2 and everything in Chinese (simplified). Even xcin is working like a charm. Did everything by the book now. I will also try CJK-LyX tomorrow. Today I don't have the guts... One problem remains: KOffice doesn't seem to like printing with GB encoded fonts though. Look at this screenshot: (Dunno if the chinese glyphs make sense, it's not me who needs that Chinese environment... :-) http://www.mmweg.rwth-aachen.de/~arne.schmitz/desktop2.jpg The print preview and also the print itself is broken. Can I do something about it? European encoded text works fine, of course. And something else: Konqueror chooses gb1320 as default encoding for http://cn.yahoo.com, but the displayed page is empty! CJK-Lyx and Lyx

Is there a way to use CJK-LyX and standard LyX in parallel with the SuSE-packages? Because CJK-LyX gets a lot segmentation violations when in de_DE locale, and if in en_US I cannot type umlauts in the usual way. Japanese in Webmail -- Yahoo

One thing to add: Japanese mail sent from Japanese windoze netscape mail was rendered my Yahoo mail with a header line in ISO-2022 and body text in EUC-JIS. Strange, but I can view them at least one by one. I wonder when Unicode will be standard everywhere and make an end to this horrendous mess. Any Webmail service handling Japanese?

Hello, I wonder if anyone made positive experience with webmail accounts displaying Japanese correctly under Netscape, Mozilla, or Konqueror. I used gmx.de so far, but I could only read Japanese after copying the displaying html to disk and manually remove the coding information. I asked gmx, but they will not correct this. Moreover, they suddenly started bothering their clients with erotic advertizements on the mail rendering pages. I tried others: Netscape webmail reciently changed to ASCII only mode, eating away anything else, i.e. forget it. They did not resond to my inquiry if their service is now for monolingual Americans only. Web.de just displays ISO-2022 code as ASCII, no matter which language setting is used in the browser. You can at least forward the mail to some other and hope to get something legible. I sent an inquiry, but no response. Yahoo.de, obviously using German default settings was the same as web.de. Finally, under yahoo.com, somwhere selecting Japan as country, I get English menues (not what I wanted), but with netscape 4.7 the Japanese text is legible in Linux. Mozilla and Konqueror failed, regardless of character code setting (ISO-2022 is the correct one). So I changed my subscriber addres to thomaspiekenbrock(a)yahoo.com If anyone made better experience with other free webmail providers, I would be happy to know. My first preference would be a German provider, but as long as it works with Japanese and Chinese, I am not so picky. Please do not mention hotmail. We all know who owns that. One more question: Occasionally I find that certain Japanese webpages are correctly displayed in Netscape, but messed up in Konqueror. The cause may be either a Konqueror problem, or a higher level of error friendliness when displaying html pages with mistakes in their html tags. Where should I report such findings? It uses some of the xjdic code written by Jim Breen and his dictionary files. Gjiten also has a kanji dictionary. Any combination of stroke count, radicals and search key can be used for kanji lookups. It requires a working X Input Method [eg. kinput2] for japanese input. how to make xcin workin?

Until now I was happily working with GNU Emacs and CJK LaTeX. Now I have to setup KMail to handle Chinese emails and maybe Chinese characters in other programs as OpenOffice too. I have the Arphic Trutype fonts installed and Mozilla and even Konqueror are displaying Chinese Web pages. Xcin is installed and can be started by e.g. LANG=zh_TW.Big5 xcin showing its blue window. I know that I have to enter export XMODIFIERS=@im=xcin-zh_TW somewhere (but where???), however I could not find out the steps to input a Chinese character into a blank email template. Maybe there is a step by step "xcin for dummies" somewhere but I did not find it. Please help. Friedrich

The Wadalab-test.tex file is in EUC-JP encoding. Probably you do not specify this encoding while loading this file into XEmacs. If you don't specify the encoding, XEmacs tries to guess and guessing the encoding right isn't always possible. To specify the encoding explicitly, first start XEmacs without giving the file name on the command line: ~$ xemacs then load the file using C-u C-x C-f Wadalab-test.tex RET euc-jp RET or C-x RET c euc-jp C-x C-f Wadalab-test.tex RET The first key combination works only with XEmacs, the second works with both XEmacs and Emacs. If specify the file name on the command line when starting XEmacs ~$ xemacs -q /usr/share/doc/packages/cjk-latex/examples/Wadalab-test.tex XEmacs tries to guess the encoding and the result of the guessing is influenced by your locale setting. For example: ~$ LC_ALL=ja_JP xemacs -q /usr/share/doc/packages/cjk-latex/examples/Wadalab-test.tex will guess correctly, because Japanese encodings are preferred when XEmacs is started in a Japanese locale. But when you start XEmacs like ~$ LC_ALL=de_DE xemacs -q /usr/share/doc/packages/cjk-latex/examples/Wadalab-test.tex it will guess wrong and you will see mojibake (unreadable nonsense). Probably you have not set ja_JP as your default locale (Please check the output of the 'locale' command). Netscape & xcin

I'm trying to set up a working KDE environment with Simplified Chinese support with the help of Mike's document. So far I got xcin.spm compiled and installed, and Netscape starts very well. Everything is in Chinese, but Netscape doesn't seem to use the input method of xcin. I just cannot type in ANY chinese characters.
