IMHO that's partly a communication/marketing issue. Most people will read v4.4 and _think_ their new HW is unsopported just because they don't know there are backports.
FWIW, I would be OK taking a driver update needed by openSUSE and not so much by SLE into the SLE12-SP3 kernel, if it would make the A choice more attractive to openSUSE users. This is of course my personal opinion and not a promise to backport drivers for your newest usb missile launcher in SLE12-SP3.
