Hi,
as we've started the development of openSUSE Leap 42.3, this question seems mandatory:
Should we - A) use a kernel based on SLE12-SP3 (4.4.x), or - B) fork an own branch based on 4.9.x?
from those options I prefer A for all the reasons others pointed out before. But for serving users this decision needs to be highly dependent on the HW support status at release time IMHO. I do not know how to measure it but if some certain percentage of "consumer" hardware is not able to use 42.3 then I prefer B or whatever is needed to achieve an acceptable coverage. What is "acceptable" and how to measure it is something I'm not sure how to do but kernel people might have most insight into this.
