Following reading of dracut.conf man page, I put this last line in /etc/dracut.conf:
omit_driver+="sata_sil"
That file earlier already had this:
#hostonly="yes"
Why during kernel installation do I see this::
Executing: /usr/bin/dracut --logfile /var/log/YaST2/mkinitrd.log --hostonly --force --add-drivers " sata_sil ata_piix, ata_generic" /boot/initrd-3.13.2-1.g97cc2ff-desktop 3.13.2-1.g97cc2ff-desktop
????????
Why is /etc/sysconfig/kernel's INITRD_MODULES overriding dracut.conf WRT the unwanted module during zypper's kernel installations?
Where is the --hostonly directive that is not in either dracut.conf or sysconfig/kernel coming from? The SUSE dracut package has a compability wrapper 'mkinitrd' which

As SUSE mkinitrd was building a initrd for the running system per default, the mkinitrd wrapper is calling dracut with the '--hostonly' parameter.
