[opensuse-kernel] upgrade from i586 to x86_64 obstacle

On a test system with 12.2 I decided I want to upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit rather than install fresh, as a test. I've done it before, but this time I noticed YaST decided all repos needed to be deleted. A byproduct of this is the BS version of xorg-x11-server[1] cannot be upgraded to 64 bit, giving me nonsensical choices to resolve, #3 of which is not keeping the 32 bit kernel installed. [opensuse-kernel] usb-modeswitch, how to activate?

Hi, I am trying to install a Huawei e173 3G Modem in open SUSE 12.2, on an eee-pc 901. Unfortunately it is not recognized. There is a simcard in it that is recognized on the other os.(W7) And also the 'CD' part, where the data is flashed, is recognized on the other os, and can be accessed and manipulated. The modem is unlocked, and the firmware is updated. In open suse only the small SD card is recognized and accessible. I just did a zypper up on a 12.2 system last updated 29 Aug, with kernel-desktop locked. Package count was 142. Afterward I unlocked kernel-desktop, then did zypper dup. I monitored the up process, creating initrd backups every time new initrd creation appeared onscreen.
