Note that memtest86+ (from memtest.org) is packaged for openSUSE. Just 
install it and it will show in your boot menu.

It would be easier to answer the question if you would point us to the 
patch in question.

My wild guess is that the patch still applies to current kernels. There 
was no architectural change between 2.6.39 and 3.0, it's really only a 
marketing (or convenience) move. As people did not expect it to happen, 
there are still many references to "kernel 2.6.x" left, which really 
mean "kernel 2.6 or later".
