I was approach by daniel while at the recent scale8x conference and was asked to get in touch with follow novell engineers that work on our partitioning tool with regard to 4k sectors size problems. Daniel is with western digital and was hoping to work with us to make sure these issues are resolved. I'll let him go into more detail.
CC'ing all the people who have participated in the previous 4k alignment discussion. Unfortunately, the partition alignment update couldn't make it into openSUSE 11.2 but the kernel side is ready and if I understand correctly upstream libparted now correctly honors the physical sector alignment, so I think we will have proper support for it in openSUSE 11.3. If I'm mistaken somewhere, please feel free to point out.
I don't think its that easy. At least for parted there is a new command line arg that needs to be set correctly when it is invoked. My thought is the yast partitioner will need a UI update to determine how the user wants parted to layout the partitions.
Maybe not: parted-2.2 made the --align=optimal default for new parititions. See the feature mentioned above. Petr -- Petr Uzel, openSUSE Boosters Team IRC: ptr_uzl @ freenode
