Hi,
I mainly switched to SuSE as it is one of the last dists that officially package kde3. Question is: is it going to stay that way? Will there be a repo for 12.2? tumbleweed? 13.x?
I would certainly hope so. With all the effort Ilya, Serghei and Robert have put into it, it would be a shame to see it go away. The only reason I can ever see it going away is if we lose the dedicated team that provides patches as necessary to accommodate upstream changes. Since there is a stable upstream for Qt3 which currently builds on gcc47 and glibc 2.16, there is no technical reason it cannot be packaged for all upcoming releases. Now whether it is packaged for tumbleweed or not is simply a manpower question. It is far more time consuming to patch and package kde3 when the underlying key packages are subject to constant change. (libpng, ffmpeg, etc..) When upstream changes occur there and are then pulled into tumbleweed, it can take considerable time to recode library changes throughout kde3 than other smaller packages. - -- David C.
