I am running a new install of 12.1 with KDE3.
If I run a media player like mplayer or vlc it hangs the OS. Completely unresposnsive. I have to power the sytem off.
This does not happen with 11.3 and KDE3. Has to be something in 12.1. Any ideas?
Does this happen only under KDE3?
Bob gave me his machine for a few days to add 12.1 to among other things. I installed both KDE3 and Gnome on his 12.1. After I found that neither SMplayer nor VLC would behave properly attempting to play a DVD, I added Ubuntu 11.10. Its default media player and SMplayer both would not play a DVD either. Then I tried booting his 11.3 and 11.0, and neither would play a DVD. All players I tried successfully played music CDs. Before I could figure out why the problem with DVDs, which included locking up the machine hard, he needed to take his machine home. I told him the failure pointed to a hardware problem. I gave him suggestions of things to try via email, among which included using a cleaning cleaning disk on his SATA DVD drive, replacing the DVD drive, checking dmesg & /var/log/messages, and continuing the thread I started for the problem on the opensuse-multimedia list. http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-multimedia/2011-12/msg00000.html First he tried the cleaning disk without effect. He bought a new DVD drive, but before installing it, he tried re-seating the SATA cable, with resulting behavioral improvement, but not totally satisfactorily, dropping and glitching instead of smooth playback. The improvement caused him to think the problem is in software, so he suggested he should sell the new DVD drive instead of installing it. Since he's virtually blind, installing it himself is a big deal for him, as is bringing the machine back to me, since he can't drive himself and doesn't live particularly close enough that coming here isn't inconvenient. He's using 64 bit and PCIe NVidia 6150SE rev a2 DVI (his motherboard also has an NVidia chip but only VGA output) with Nouveau driver on 12.1 and Ubuntu, but with NVidia driver on 11.3 and I think on 11.0. On 11.4, which only has KDE 4.7.x (IIRC from repositories/KDE:/Release:/47), I don't know which driver he's using. I still think he has a DVD drive problem, which could be the cable rather than the DVD drive itself, but I think is actually more likely to be a dirty lens that the cleaning disk couldn't clean well enough of the probable cigarette tar film it has collected. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
