Ilya, FYI. i originally installed 12.1m3_x86/kde3 (from factory) onto a partition, to test. Generally, I refrained from updating. Today I updated from KDE3 factory, about 853 packages (incl the main 12.1 repos -- to 12.1m5, I assume). Personal Settings on the menu is now working fine (no blank left side). System Setting module, that I installed to work around Personal Settings not working, still is not showing the kcmgtk.desktop module in "Appearance". I think I had this before in 11.3 or 4 testing, but can't remember what we did to get it to show. No matter: I can delete System Settings now that Personal Settings works. Inserting CDs and DVDs into a burner works --- KDE throws up the normal "what do you want me to do?" dialogue box, and Kb3 recognizes the content of the drives, which it didn't before. However, I still have HAL installed; should I delete it? Clicking on the desktop "My Computer" icon still produces a KDE dialogue box that asks me to select what program I want to run. IOW, it doesn't work. Konquerer file manager also borks out if I key in sysinfo:/. Having only a wired ethernet connection, I don't use (nor want to use, given its infamy) the Network Manager program.
