I installed plasma5-desktop on a Leap server that was already running XFCE. Upon doing this and rebooting I was greeted with a fallback login screen (looked similar to IceWM). Upon checking the wiki I realized I needed plasma5-session but installing that and rebooting did not help. I then tried patterns-openSUSE-plasma5_basis and rebooted but the issue was still not resolved. Thanks to some help on IRC I discovered that in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager the DISPLAYMANAGER variable was set to "". Changing it to DISPLAYMANAGER="sddm" and rebooting resolved the issue.
I dont know if this was caused by the order I installed the packages (since I did desktop before I did session) but I just wanted to see if anyone else could reproduce this?
Were you unable to log into the plasma5 session from your xfce display manager (gdm?)? I don't think installing plasma5 should change the display manager on people. They might just want to play around with Plasma5 as a secondary desktop.
