[opensuse-kde] elarun splash with KDM?

What actually controls what splash is available, the greeter/DM, or the DE? Is there a TW or Leap package I can install to get Elarun in KF5 instead of a choice between Breeze and nothing? Configure splash doesn't provide a way to see where the selections live so as to be able to run rpm -qf on them to see what rpm owns them. Installing kde4-wallpaper-default got Elarun for the desktop wallpaper, but not for splash. SDDM isn't an option due to KDM features SDDM lacks, unless SDDM can be used just for configuration access to optional splashes and not required to be the configured greeter. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." [opensuse-kde] Random encoding errors

Hi all, I recently installed opensuse 13.2 on my laptop but I get random encoding errors with non-kde applications (xchat, firefox, thunderbird, pdigin). This lead from some letters are wrong enconded (e.g. 'g' shows up as a '3') up to the case that half of the letters are shown as blanks. This behavior appears as well in the menus. KDE Platform Version: 4.14.9 In "system settings -> locale" I have: Country= System Country (United Kingdom) Preferred Language= British English Available Languages= American English, Catalan For the record /etc/sysconfig/language: RC_LANG="en_GB.UTF-8" ROOT_USES_LANG="ctype" AUTO_DETECT_UTF8="no" INSTALLED_LANGUAGES="ca_ES,en_GB,en_US" I have the feeling that the encoding errors are more when I restart the computer with the applications left open. Any idea what this could be and how to debug/fix this? [opensuse-kde] Need a patch applied to kde 4x upstream bug 345174

I'm hurt (badly, but I will survive) by the following upstream bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=345174 It seems the patch has been added in the Application 15.04 .. I'm still using openSUSE 13.1 with Current Repository. Could one of our beloved packager have a look to check if the patch is also applied there. Thanks a lot. Looks like this pkg is not set up for the KF5 directory structure, it installs to the "kde4" default. Anyway, I copied the .desktop to kservices5 and the so to /usr/lib64/qt5/plugins and I can select the preview option in Dolphin, but I get no previews for my matroska files. I changed mimetypes in the .desktop to include application/x-matroska. Any ideas how to proceed to get this working? Has anyone tried Okular 5? Is it stable and functional? The old style menu now has Configure KDE4 Applications" at the base level, but instead of "Configure Desktop" (systemsettings5) at the base level, or in System, or in Utilities, it's in Applications. [opensuse-kde] TW "Configure Desktop" empty

Having just done 'zypper ref; zypper up' on a TW installation (with no optional DE/WM repos enabled) I wanted to run through "Configure Desktop" (systemsettings5). It opens a shadow of a window complete with decorations, but a popup complains it "was unable to find any views, and hence has nothing to display", and on dismissing the popup the window closes. What is it that is supposed to provide "views"? When both "Configure Desktop" and "Configure KDE4 Applications" are in the (classic) start menu, is only the latter supposed to work or be used? The latter doesn't seem to have any way to turn off (compositing) effects except by disabling each effect separately. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." [opensuse-kde] Heads-up: intel driver bug may crash Plasma 5 constantly (+ workaround)

KDE developer Martin Sandsmark has investigated a bug that may cause a constant stream of crashes in Plasma 5[1]. It is not a bug in Plasma 5, but an Intel driver bug. As far as I can see, the affected version is not in the openSUSE stable releases, nor in TW, but I'm posting it here for awareness because it also contains a workaround (change SNA acceleration to UXA, although that may degrade performance). Tumbleweed. As it seems virtual desktop backgrounds can no longer be unique to the particular desktop, I must explore activities and I have none and see no application for creating them. I have the widget "Activities Manager" but it show nothing, and I see no way to create activities via system settings.
