Switching to gstreamer indeed fixed the issue.
Running "sudo /usr/lib64/vlc/vlc-cache-gen -f /usr/lib64/vlc/plugins" (for a 32bit system omit the '64') manually should fix the crashes. Until the next VLC update at least...
