Both v4 and v5 of QtWebKit need the antique? Only for HTML5 AV output? No, both can use gst0_10 and gst1, but since phonon-gst would be broken with gst1, and phonon-gst1 does not work, we've gone with 0_10 for now.
Is this "never properly ported" an upstream issue, with Fedora 20 and/or (K)ubuntu 13.10 likely or known to be released around the same time as or modestly before 13.1 with a similar dependency on the antique? I am not sure do you mean about some specific issue? If not, then yes, all distro's are in same situation wrt. gst1 vs. gst0_10.
Lots of talk of canberra and gtk there. This is KDE as pure as I can manage. Would adding pulseaudio help anything? Nope. Issue here is that both gstreamer's cannot be loaded at the same time in a single app.
If I proceed by "breaking" libQtWebKit# by denying the ancient gstreamer, but have phonon-backend-vlc and all (50 of) its deps installed, and all of alsa, would all of (solution 1: do not install) .... truly be broken, or just broken according to the package management system's reporting of dependencies? Should I try just to see what works or not? It's just a test system anyway. Execute zypper se -s --requires libQtWebKit.so.4 to see which packages are linking against, and require, QtWebkit
