I'm new to KMail and KDE4 in general, I used to be a Gnome2 and Thunderbird user but I would like to give a try to all the "K" applications.

I'm trying to setup my Gmail account with KMail but I'm facing a weird problem. Even though I've successfully configured KMail with the Gmail IMAP settings and the application lists all of my IMAP folders, no emails appear inside the folders. All the folders are completely empty. Every time I click on a folder KMail automatically starts syncing all of the IMAP folders again and again all over again and no emails ever appear.

I've seen similar behavior with large mailboxes. It takes akonadi some time to sync up. In my case a ~17000 message mailbox took a few hours and that was on a local disk.

You should try akonadiconsole it probably gives a better overview about what's actually already synced.
