despite removing everything KDEPIM and akonadi-related on this machine, I still get an error dialogue on every login:

If akonadi_kcal_resource is segfaulting and it has been is uninstalled, there should be no binary there to restart on login.
Check whether kdepim4-runtime is still installed. Also check that you haven't got any hand-built kdepim stuff in your PATH (unlikely given that you're ripping it out now, but I like to be thorough).

Spot on! Thanks, Will. kdepim4-runtime was still there. But no longer :)
For future reference, rpm -qf `which akonadi_kcal_resource` will tell you which rpm owns the binary, as long as it is in PATH. If not, for KDE apps there are some non-user- relevant binaries in /usr/lib[64]/kde4/libexec/ so you could look there then pass the resulting full path to rpm -qf.
