What are the known problems with POP? At the moment I am a pretty happy user of kmail with a couple of pop accounts and filters. Until a couple of weeks ago pop with kmail was (in my experience) unusable, but since a few weeks it is working, although at times a bit slow when processing many messages. (I am still in testing phase though, leaving messages on the server and having TB as backup.)
