I have a few questions regarding some packages in openSUSE 12.1 KDE. 1) What are the difference between the "KDE4 Desktop Environment" and "KDE4 Base System" patterns? -> The two seem similar because there are important/non-important KDE packages in both patterns. -> For example, I naturally figured "KDE4 Base System" would only have the packages that are core to KDE on openSUSE. Notice I say KDE on openSUSE because openSUSE might have certain packages that are *expected* to be installed when KDE is used as the main DE, but those same packages may not be dependencies. And I originally thought "KDE4 Desktop Environment" simply housed all other KDE specific packages. 2) Are kscd and gimp needed as part of the default install? -> Given the decline of CD's (including music CD's), and that the kscd code is essentially unmaintained, it probably isn't usually to provide it. Also, Amarok can play CD's along with many other music players. -> Gimp is a gtk based application - a good one - but still a gtk app. Would Krita not be a better KDE alternative? See the features of both at the bottom. Their would easily be room on the LiveCD if gimp was replaced: Krita with dependencies and recommendations: ~47 MB Gimp with dependencies and recommendations (including sane): 90+ MB There would actually be 40MB of extra space left over for other packages that people might need. Anyways, sorry for the rant. I simply like to look over the smaller details since things like these are lower on the priority list for others during development.
