Interestingly, it's stopped happening since I switched to using Thunderbird on the laptop. Some sort of loop condition between the two Kmails logged into the same IMAP server?

Could be an effect of akonadi proxing things ? Certainly the way to look at.
Maybe, as it doesn't happen with Thunderbird, which presumably doesn't use akonadi. But I'm not sure how to investigate that idea.
Bob, did you use the same username on the desktop and laptop, said in another way, are your home synchronized between the two ?
Same username and UID, but not synchronised/mirrored.
