I do have an xorg.conf - immediately after a clean (reformat) install - as well as xorg.conf.d. The NVidia installer may have created it, but I thought that if the xorg.conf file was present, it overrides the directory? I think the NVidia installer uses the file anyway.

there a reason you asked?
and that leads to problems. Did you try the driver from the repo (after
removing the self-compiled one)?
And you can check whether you have a xorg.conf, 11.4 should not have one and
if there is a left-over it could also cause trouble.
