Hi all,
I've narrowed it down: The file ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc contains a line
OpenGLIsUnsafe=false
by default, even for a newly created user. Changing false to true avoids the problem, and I can now log in, but of course, effects are now disabled. So, something is wrong with OpenGL, as suggested by you guys (Thanks!).
What I now have to figure out is what changed with OpenGL - the machine hardware hasn't changed, with the exception of the adding of an extra SATA hard drive; the software is a new install of 11.4 with all updates, and I've tried various versions of the NVidia drivers - all with the same problem.
I know that this is now likely to be an OpenGL or NVidia issue, but I have no idea where to start researching this. Any clues would be appreciated, and I also realise that it will not be an issue for this list any more, so once again, thanks to everyone for suggestions.
