Try "phonon-backend-vlc" from Packman or KDE:Unstable:Playground repository instead. I consider those packages "more official".
And they work for me on two machines - one 11.3+kde4.6rc+amarok2.3.90, the other 11.3+kde4.4+amarok2.3.2.
Hi Martin, thanks for the reply . I doublechecked but i'm using phonon-backend-vlc Version 0.3.1-1.1 from KDE:Unstable:Playground slight correction - the xine backend is working after I removed the audiodevices KDE complained are not there anymore - I had this complained since I updated to KDE4.6 RC1 I believe although I'm not so sure anymore.
