ATM, gnome-settings-daemon is not running here. I'll bet it doesn't start by itself there either, but gets started if you open gnome-control-center, after which your GTK fonts enlarge. --
That iscorrect. I must open gnome-control-center and click on 'appearance' to have the GTK font settings work. So how do we make it start at start-up?
add the following command wherever you keep your startup files (.profile, kde's systemsettings->startup and shutdown, ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh, etc) /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon I have to use the full path because it is not in my search path for some reason, gnome knows where to look so it doesn't care I guess. Alternatively just running a gnome/gtk application will often start the daemon for you. Also be aware that some gnome programs (grip ?) still use gtk1 so those applications may not use the preferences you have created.
