This works for me. If I am able to add contacts to kaddressbook and they show up there, I can access the from kmail and the birthdays ares shown in korganizer. However, I often cannot add contacts to kaddressbook, because there is the error that akonadi is not running Workaround: close kontact, stop akonadi and restart kontact (But be sure that kontact starts with kmail, if it starts with kaddressbook it somehow fails to properly start akonadi, probably because my addressbook is via imap.) Sometimes I cannot choose any addressbook to add my contacts to -> I am already blocked by kaddressbook. Once it happened that I could add contacts to kaddressbook but they did not show up in kaddressbook. Only the Workaround for the akonadi problem solved it. I also always get en error that something is wrong with akonadi after restarting a session and kontact starting automatically. After closing kontact and stopping akonadi restarting kontact usually gives no error. So to summarize, I cannot reproduce your problem, but the current state with kaddressbook / akonadi is not good from my experience.
