Have you thought yet, that panel might be bigger by default? Seems to me too narrow and when i set 40 points, it looks much better, e.g. especially systray border.(personally i use 50 points, but for someone it could be too much:-) Panel look, as well as icons are snazzy, so why do you want to hide

A small size is a compromise for small screens - think of netbooks. I guess a new first-run wizard could set panel layouts according to screen size and user preferences, and other features like window border size.
