Hi Paul, I had a similar problem, see
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=511480 , which went away when
I edited kdesurc and then returned it to it's original state. See :-

for the way I changed kdesurc and then returned it to it's original
state. I logged out and then in after each change.
If this restores your kdesu please add to the bug.
