Do you think it is KDE 4.2.4 problem?
Here I have Version 4.1.3 (KDE 4.1.3) "release 4.10.4" running.
And via
 Systemeinstellungen/Reiter Allgemein - Standard Komponenten/
I can define a browser (di englische Bezeichnung findest Du sicher).
 Here I have /usr/bin/firefox selected.
Maybe you can define here even in 4.2.4 the browser.
"Systemeinstellungen" is the program (according ps -aef):  
/usr/bin/systemsettings -caption Persönliche Einstellungen -icon 
preferences-system
