To back that up somewhat, on my system (also with 1 GB RAM but with 
NVIDIA graphics), the memory usage at startup is also ~280-300 MB. 
Individual processes eat up system resources in the following way:-

1. plasma ~ 30-40 MB (which easily shoots up to ~60 MB when I change a 
wallpaper or the plasma theme or add a few widgets, etc.)
2. krunner ~ 25 MB
3. kwin ~ 25 MB 
4. about 2 or 3 instances of knotify with ~ 10-15 MB each
5. Xorg ~ 50 - 70 MB (but this may be due to NVIDIA's problems)

I am using KDE 4.2.3  (KDE/42 repository) with Qt 4.5.1 too, and it looks 
like these core KDE4 processes (1-4) are using way more memory than 
what used to be in openSUSE 11.0 (or 11.1 with 4.1.3), does it not?
