These steps should work without any problem.

Create your dropbox account

Down load the program or source code from the dropbox website (or 
your distribution)

Install as you normally would (deb, rpm, source), this will install 
the nautilus extension and additional files.

log out

log in to a gnome session (i'm sure this could be done some other 
way but this worked for me)

When you login to gnome, an applet (the dropboxd) will start and a 
notification will appear. Right click on the applet to start 
dropbox.

A guided setup wizard will open asking for your dropbox login (email 
address) and password. (This is the only time you will have to go 
through these steps)

Once you have entered this info click on through to the end.

At this point 2 new folders will have been created in your home 
directory, ~/.dropbox-dist  and ~/Dropbox

The .dropbox-dist folder contains the dropboxd executable, create a 
link to that program in your ~/.kde/Autostart folder and your 
~/.kde4/Autostart folder. Now whenever you login to either flavor 
of kde (or gnome) Dropbox will start (quietly without 
intervention).

You can log out of gnome and back in to your favorite Sweet KDE and 
everything should work quietly in the background, no more 
requesters (the little dropbox icon will be in your systray, but 
you can pretty much ignore it)

The ~/Dropbox folder is the location for files you have placed or 
want to place on the network.
