I installed amarok with 'zypper install kde4-amarok' using the
repositories above.  The rest is kde4 is working fine.

Weird problem. Do you have phonon-backend-xine installed?

Using Gstreamer would be my first suspect for amarok2 playback problems.

thanks for you reply! I was about to reply on my own email, with the
information that xine was indeed configured as backend. I later on came up
with the idea that gstreamer might be an alternative..., you were quicker
:)

Hmm, just checked; gstreamer seems to be installed:
# rpm -ql gstreamer-0_10
/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10

But is is not offered in kde's multimedia backend configuration tab. The
only backed offered there is xine. How can I add gstreamer (e.g.) to the
list of backends? Why is gstreamer not offered? Can I test gstreamer on
the command line?

I meant it the other way around - that gstreamer was likely the problem and
xine might be the solution.

You need phonon-backend-gstreamer to use gstreamer with phonon (systemsettings
-> multimedia)

Amarok-1.4 works fine in the same (kde4) desktop.

Any ideas, tips?

Which engine do you use in 1.4? (xine or yauap/gstreamer?)
