I installed 11.1 shortly after it was released and elected to install KDE4.1 as a test bed and to see how I liked it. It was OK but lt lacked many features. So I waited until 4.2 was released, The other night I did the "one click" install and came up with a huge amount of dependencies. I kind of expected that from following the mailing list.
KDE 4.2 was not yet released. http://www.kde.org/
On many of the dependencies the only option was to uninstall the package. Kmail was one of them. I OK'd that (and others) thinking they would be reinstalled. Wrong !!
If you chose to remove them, why would they be re-installed? The software does whatever you tell it to.
The actual message on the dependency was "Nothing provides libical0>=0.43 Needed by kdepimlibs4-4.1.96-1.5x86_64" and was the same for many other apps. Now, kdepimlibs4-4.1 ???? Why ? And the other apps with dependencies were designated 4.1 also. No upgrades on those packages? And what the heck is, or where do I find libical0 ?
If you have a look at the repos, there are updated versions of all these, so either you or your mirror are doing something wrong. There are packages to be removed, because they do not exist in KDE 4.2 anymore, but certainly not kmail.
Not only that, when the upgrade was done doing it's thing, the next time I booted up 11.1 the whole desktop had changed, theme, everything. AND the taskbar kicker or whatever it is called now was missing. Gone! I couldn't figure out how to bring it back or find a way to bring up the menu or log out.
To add a panel, right-click the desktop to unlock and add a panel. If you do not care about your desktop settings: open a konsole, do kquitapp plasma, wait until plasma quit, rm ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma*, start plasma again.
So, bottom line, if someone could explain the libical thing so I can get Kmail back it would be good. Then maybe I can find out how KDE4.2 is.
Check the repository you use, whther it contains the package. Do not use smart or anything other than zypper+YaST for upgrading.
