In 4.1? .. works for me. Of course it isn't bug free, but it isn't in KDE3
either.
KNode suffers a little bit from lack of love - but wrapping of sent posts was
fixed recently - and I hope you don't send in iso-8859-xx charsets ;-)
KDE4 apps in openSUSE use ~/.kde4/ - so it won't automatically use your old
KDE3 settings in ~/.kde/.
When I switched to KDE4.1.0 five months ago I initially tried moving
everything straight over - but I had a lot of weird little issues - so in the
end I decided to reconfigure stuff (kmail, akregator, korganizer, knode) from
scratch to be safe.
Moving the e-mails themselves is of course no problem at all. Generally my
experience is that data migrates seemlessly, settings not quite so.
Only one thing to do - try it. If you're just a little bit careful with you
can do it without risking losing anything.

how mature has KDE4 become currently?
I'm especially concerned about
PIM, I use Kontakt a lot, especially KMail, the Usenet client, calendar
and stuff. Is this already fully available with KDE4?

What about
transition of KMail email accounts, does this work smoothly? Would
KMail of KDE4 continue to use KMail3 email folder?
