By "edit" what do you what to do exactly?

If you want to add/remove entries try looking at
/opt/kde3/share/applications and /opt/kde3/share/applnk

Hi, first of all, thanks for your help (also Patrick).

I want to add a new categorie at top-level for my own programs. Its a
new folder and it should contain subfolders and program-entries. To
overwrite the user-settings is not an option for me. I need to know what
I have to do, if I want a folder called "Software" with a subfolder
called "Math" and applinks in it.

You must create/install *.desktop-files in an appropriate location - for
inspiration look at some of the desktop-files in
/opt/kde3/share/applications/kde/

There are some freedesktop.org standards for this stuff.
