Say, could it not be that you suffer a bad 'swappinness' condition ?

Try to reduce your 'swappiness' from 60 to 10 and see what happens.

If you can't fish it out any more, I can drop you a short version on how to
rig this option. CU.

Probably because your background color is black.
Mine was white, but it is now blue :-)

And, I have no idea where to start debugging.
I just downloaded and installed latest nvidia Beta driver, so let we see is
there any change.

First, after start, desktop effects are dead.
